People know I like listening to Korean pop music. One thing I like more than that is to watch Korean music videos. I love the hot girls, revealing outfits and sexy dances. However, sometimes the line is crossed and I am not sure if I am comfortable with what I am seeing.
Case in point, below is a screen shot I captured from my favorite Korean group, 4 Minute. The girl displayed is HyunAh. She recently turned 18 and she's throwing up the shocker!

Whether she's consciously aware of what she's doing or it is the result of some PR puppeteer master pulling strings or a dance choreographer pulling a joke for their American friends, the end result is that this piece of mainstream media is showing a barely legal teenager displaying a sexually suggestive gesture.
What am I supposed to think about this?
Two points:
ReplyDelete1. She is legal age in Canada, and it's not like you're watching her to gain insights on Java development. Whether the sexual aspects are implicit or explicit, they're still there and everyone (her included) are aware of it.
2. I had to research to work out what that hand sign is. :( If we treat Wikipedia as authoritative, then it's not the shocker. She's not curling her thumb in. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shocker_(hand_gesture)
I assume HyunAh's clueless to the North American "shocker" hand sign otherwise she'd tuck in her thumb like a pro.

Then again, Asian culture has a sense of humor for finger-poking the anus. E.g. "1000 Years of Pain":

I had no idea there was a third requirement to the shocker. Well, then this article is nullified. I can go back to watching her shake her booty with a clear conscious.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the references, Jason. I appreciate the effort.
I like this group better than your past ones... there's less people and their hair is pretty unique - less confusing!
ReplyDeletehaha Thanks Emme. But to be fair, there's only one girl group I like that has nine members that look all the same. Just one.
