2009: Year In Review

The new year has been rung in and everyone is looking towards the future. Since I'm always looking towards the future, I figure this is the perfect time for me to look back on the year that has just past. Here are some notable things that happened in 2009.

I discovered and embraced the philosophy behind uncluttering and minimalism. My boss at work has noted that my desk is always bare and made it a mission to get me to scatter some paper around. I've brought that same uncluttered attitude to my desk at home. It was liberating.

It continued to proliferate throughout the rest of my life. I have cleaned up my room and I have began tackling my closet. I removed so many articles of clothing that I never wore, was fashionably out of date or haven't seen the light of day in years. It feels great not having to toss a pile of clothes onto my chair to get into bed and then onto my bed to get on my computer.

I started playing volleyball. It has been years before I played a sport. But with the encouragement of a few friends I gave it a shot. I found out that I'm actually not that bad. Now I play regularly and I'm forming a second team so I can play even more.

I continued and expanded my volunteering experiences. I continue to volunteer at the Canadian Blood Service clinic and I still have a good time doing it. I'm quite certain I won't be there forever, but as of right now, I will continue serving soup and juice.

Also, with the support of a few individuals, I found myself donating my time to Santa's Anonymous. I helped wrap presents and then a week later I delivered them to the families receiving them. Although I was appalled at Santa's Anonymous' inefficiency, I'm glad I spent the time to bring cheer into people's lives who are having a tough time.

I hosted people at my house. For years, I never wanted anyone to come over to my house. It was a mess, there's nothing to do and my parents were an embarrassment. This year, I cleaned my house as best I could and put the rest of my worries behind me. I had people over and I loved it. I thoroughly enjoy having company and being a good host.

My best friend and I suffered through a summer of workouts. I constantly revel about the days when I worked out every day. During the summer, my friend and I commited to working out every morning. Although we began to slip, every day turned to MWF and 5:00AM became 6:30AM, I am still proud of what we accomplished. I went from weaksauce to fairly competent. I tried different exercises and discovered a new philosophy behind working out.

I began to save. "I should save" had always rested at the back of my mind but until this year, action was never taken. But this year, I put it into full gear. I've got automatic savings set up and I'm on my way, albeit slowly, towards buying my own place. With a smaller budget for regular expenses, I've been cutting back wherever I can. In fact, I gave up my gym membership, playing pool every week, daily snacks at Booster Juice or Starbucks and going out as much.

I'm sure a lot more happened. I met a lot of people. I found, lost, found, lost, etc. love. I watched a ton of movies. But there you go, that's my 2009 Year In Review.
