It really doesn't matter how resolved you are; when you see a squirrel, you will deviate from the path you're taking. I find that I've done just that. Not too long ago, I knew exactly how I defined myself and was on my way of solidify those values. But a few months later, I find myself so busy with everything and nothing that I haven't really been able to be myself. So, here's a list of things that I feel is wrong and how I'm going to fix it.
Watch it. Summer blockbusters this year have been few and far between. I am not able to get myself excited for anything the majority of this summer. The few times I want to go see a movie, I'm inclined to go a few weeks after opening day so that the crowds are smaller.
But a slow season of summer blockbusters is the perfect excuse to catch up on past movies. I am going to continue my mission of watching classics and pop-culture references. In addition, I'll take the time to see some of the critically acclaimed movies that I've missed lately, such as Gran Torino and the Wrestler.
Read it. I have always been a slow reader; at times, I may read at half the speed of my friends. It also doesn't help that I can't seem to sit still for more than an hour at a time. So the lack of time lately has killed my attempt to read more.
I am going to make time for myself to read. It can be an entire evening dedicated to sitting down and opening a book or an hour or two before I go to sleep. In addition to making time, I won't worry whether the story I'm experiencing is "smart" or not. If I want to read a dumb book about Nazi zombies, I will.
Hear it. In an attempt to not alienate my friends with a bunch of trance tracks, I began to tailor my iPod for Games Night. Now I find that my iPod is filled with a bunch of albums that may be pleasing to others but don't really represent my musical tastes.
Especially since my iPod is limited in space, those albums are gone. I am no longer going to keep an album if I have no intention of listening to it when I'm alone. I don't mind having a variety of music but, from now on, it's going to be the variety I choose.
Don't get me wrong. I have been having a blast these last few months. I don't want it to stop but I do need it to slow down. I need to find myself again. I feel that if I don't, I won't have any character and I'll be boring to be with. So... I guess I'm doing this for you!
Have to agree with the movie situation. I'm convincing Emily to watch some "classics" from my time growing up. We've already watched "Risky Business" and "Dirty Dancing". We've got "Top Gun", "The Blues Brothers", and "Ghost" ready to go.
ReplyDeleteBe yourself. Do not cator your genre and artist selection to the tastes of others... just remember to delete all tracks that are ** or less to make room for more *****... haha.
ReplyDeleteFor pop culture movies, I have yet to see "Napoleon Dynamite". Chris introduced me to "Hackers" and a younger Angelina Jolie. The Nostalgia Chick showed me that I apparently blocked out how tight David Bowie's pants were in "Labyrinth".
ReplyDeleteWhich era of classics were you intending to watch? I grew up watching musicals like "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", and "The Sound of Music" is one of my fave movies.
I haven't picked up a novel for leisure reading since uni. Mom got "The Good Earth" and "Les Miserables" for me. She's a big believer in reading classics for conversation fodder. It's hard to start reading them when Wikipedia already told me their plots. Ah, Internet, destroyer of minds.
Yeah, go with what looks interesting. Nazi zombies sound like good imagination fuel.
Ooh, there are trance albums?
Wait...squirrel? Are you a dog, perchance?
ReplyDeleteI like to zoom in on rabbits pretending to be rocks.
@Peter: I wouldn't put Risky Business, Dirty Dancing and Ghost at the top of my list. But they are constantly referenced and I hope to watch them in the future. Top Gun is a GREAT movie though. It's amazing how fun watching things go fast is.
ReplyDelete@Jason: Really? Is it really appropriate to subject my friends to only music I like? I only began to tailor my playlist when there were complaints of only hearing Coldplay and Stone Temple Pilots.
I will continue to expand my musical tastes so that I don't alienate anyone. But it will be on my terms. Besides, if I never put anything new I would have never discovered how bad NIN are.
@Mythi: Squirrel! I'm glad someone got my Up! reference. Any "classic" movie is fine with me. I loved Gone with the Wind and My Fair Lady but I recently rented Ghostbusters and a chat with my friends made me want to finish the Back to the Future trilogy.
I listened to a lot of trance a few years ago. My tastes have taken a drastic change recently but I'm always up for a good trance album. Have any recommendations?
