The Buzz is Fading

This week Google released upon the world Google Buzz. It merged the two great social media sites, Twitter and Facebook, into a super entity backed by a giant internet presence.

On paper, this is a Godsend for the internet. The ability to share content with the rest of the world, limit its access to people you actually care to communicate with and comment on it in a forum like thread system. But within a few (four) short hours I had announced that Google Buzz was dead.

In the information age, content is king. If you don't have content, there is no point for any existence on the internet. Why is it that the number one rule of being a successful blogger is to establish a steady schedule of posts? It's because if you can't get people coming back for more, you will be instantly forgotten.

At its offset, the stream of content via Google Buzz was a slow trickle, at best. Today, I received only two buzzes. That's not near enough for Buzz to be successful.

But wait, Google has also released a software development kit for Buzz. Soon, Buzz will be integrated with Facebook, much like it is integrated with Twitter. Well ... let me tell you, the integration with Twitter sucks. It takes about five hours for my post on Twitter to show up on Buzz. I can only assume that Facebook integration will suck just as much.

There's also an inherent flaw. I still have to log into Twitter to make a post. I still have to log into Facebook to post on people's walls. While I'm there, I've already got the integrated content that Google is pushing. Why are we duplicating exposure to this kind of content? It's just annoying.

But, of course, all my reasoning is moot. There's one definitive test as to whether Google Buzz is a success or not. Was it able to distract me long enough to prevent me from writing this post? Nope. Fail.

  1. I haven't even tried Wave yet (or even Chrome), and now there's Buzz, which seems to be suffering from user backlash, according to Lifehacker. It may have gotten better by now, but I don't yet have enough motivation to potentially make my social networking easier. And it seems like Buzz won't yet. Thanks for describing it.
