Songs of Reflection

It wasn't a very long time ago when I told everyone I didn't listen to the lyrics of songs. I mean, I listened to trance; what kind of lyrics were there? But starting earlier this year, I started looking up the lyrics of the songs I was listening to and was enthralled to find that not all lyrics were as empty as I had once thought.

Like the movies I watch, I am surprised at the amount of reflection I am capable of when listening to these songs. It seems like everyone, even rock stars, go through the same situations and emotions that I do. It helps me feel like I'm not alone walking down the road of life.

Here are some of the lyrics that I feel reflect the way I have been feeling.

Coldplay - Lost
Just because I'm losing
Doesn't mean I'm lost!
Doesn't mean I'll stop
Doesn't mean I'm across

Just because I'm hurting
Doesn't mean I'm hurt
Doesn't mean I didn't get what I deserved
No better and no worse

Kanye West - Love Lockdown (Tiesto Remix)
I'm not lovin' you the way I wanted to
See I wanna move but can't escape from you
So I keep it low, keep a secret code
So everybody else don't have to know

[...]

I'm not lovin' you the way I wanted to
I can't keep my cool, so I keep it true
I got somethin' to lose, so I gotta move
I can't keep myself and still keep you too

Pearl Jam - Black
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

Matthew Good  - Us Remains Impossible
And I know you, so you know me
But us remains impossible
Yeah, us remains impossible

And I know you know that I ain't me, so
Us remains impossible
Yeah, us remains impossible
Yeah, us remains impossible
Yeah, us remains impossible

  1. You have blogged! I approve! The world is moving again :). Now another song to add to your collection: Sleep by Riley Armstrong.
    Main chorus:
Sleep, no I never get enough
    Always waking up tired

  2. The lyrics of my life:
My n*ggas don't dance, they just pull up their pants, now do the rock away
Lean back, lean back, lean back, lean back

  3. When you looked up lyrics were you surprised that they were different from what you thought they were? Haha, I hate it when reading lyrics
ruins the song in cases where my incorrect lyrics were better.

    Love Lockdown
"So I keep it low, keep a secret coke,
So that everybody else don't have it, no.
    ...
I can't keep my coke so i keep it true.
    ..."

  4. @Emily: I've never heard that song but I can totally agree with those lyrics.

@Erika: Not really sure what those lyrics are supposed to mean but that's a hella catchy song.

    @Jason: Pearl Jam - Glorified G
    "Glorified version of a pelican"
    Best lyrics ever.

  5. ...take care, you; those are heavy words to be living by! ^^

I've always been a words girl - song lyrics are a bit of an obsession (the song changes totally when you hear them, particularly when you get tricky songs that sound happy but tackle either huge issues or are not as happy as they first appear. Or vice versa!)

I remember being floored by Vienna Teng's "Shasta" after looking up the words - Third Eye Blind's ubiquitous "Semi-Charmed Life" is another good example.

Lyrics of my life? In this moment - Cloud Cult's "Journey of the Featherless" sums it up pretty well. ♥

(Got myself a mission - I'm going to find heaven
I made crepe paper wings, I think they'll carry me a while

I left you a love poem, the best I have written
My favorite words were the ones I couldn't spell

They say that I'm a lunatic; they say that I am full of it
I say that it's worth dreaming, just for the dream of it

It's all about passion; it's all about perception
Don't call me on my cell phone
    'Cause there ain't no reception)

    ...yeah. ^^
